From Seed to Chaos: Growing Dahlias the Wildstyler Way

From Seed to Chaos: Growing Dahlias the Wildstyler Way

If you’re the kind of gardener who likes a little magic, a little mess, and a whole lot of colour - you’re in the right place. Dahlia seeds are your ticket to the unexpected. Unlike tubers (the copy-paste of the dahlia world), seeds are rebellious. They don’t come with instructions. They’re full of genetic surprises, waiting to bloom into something entirely their own.

At Feral Flower Farm, we’re not just selling dahlia seeds. We’re sending you potential. Chaos. Colour. Maybe even the next showstopper in your garden.

Why Grow Dahlias from Seed?

  • One-of-a-kind blooms: Every seed-grown dahlia is unique. No clones, no copies - just nature doing her weird and wonderful thing.
  • Stronger genetics: Seed-grown plants can often be tougher and more disease-resistant.
  • Creative freedom: You’re not growing to replicate. You’re growing to discover.

If you’re craving a flower patch that looks like it was raised by witches and rock stars, start with seeds.

When to Plant Dahlia Seeds in New Zealand

In Aotearoa, dahlia seeds can be sown indoors from late August to October, depending on your region. Start them in trays or small pots with seed-raising mix, then harden them off before planting out after the last frost. If you’re in the North Island, you’ve got a bit more wiggle room. South Islanders - wait ‘til Jack Frost packs his bags.

How to Grow Dahlia Seeds – The Wildstyler Way

  1. Sow like a rebel: No need for perfection. Lightly cover seeds and keep the mix moist but not swampy.
  2. Keep warm: 18–22°C is ideal. Think of it as a cosy mosh pit for baby dahlias.
  3. Label EVERYTHING: Because you will forget which one looked like fireworks and which one grew three stems like a mutant spider.
  4. Transplant gently: When they’re big enough to handle, move them into bigger pots or straight into the garden.
  5. Wait for the magic: Most will flower in their first season - and some might just blow your damn mind.

Can I Save Seeds From My Own Dahlias?

Hell yes. Just remember: only open-pollinated flowers will pass on true traits. If your garden is a floral free-for-all like ours, expect the unexpected. That’s the fun of it.
